The sun is shining longer and the temperature gauges are steadily rising, it’s officially summer in India and it looks like it’s going to be a scorcher. Summer time is known for it’s beautiful sunsets, ice cream cones and sweet memories made under palm trees, but summer and all of it’s fun, comes with it’s own dangers. As afternoon temperatures rise, so do your chances of heat related illnesses that can quickly take a serious turn.
With a large portion of the nation dealing with sweltering heat these next few days (guess it was above 40 Centigrade in Lucknow yesterday) remember the possibility exists that our youth will be participating in these conditions. To prevent heat illness it begins with the individual preparing for the weather. Hydration, and not just 3 sodas the day before, we are talking nearly a gallon of water in a 24 hour period. The other very basic way to stem off heat illness is to simply not practice when the temps and humidity are absurd; if possible early morning or late evening times would be best if practice MUST go on that day.
This summer, protect your children, yourself and your loved ones with knowledge and preparation. Avoid the dangers of dehydration, heat exhaustion or heat stroke while enjoying your fun in the sun over summer break. Watch for the tell tale signs and be prepared to take action when you recognize a heat related illness creeping up.

HOW TO AVOID SUNSTROKE?
It is always better to remain indoors in an air-conditioned room. If possible postpone outdoor activity or else shift it to early morning or after sunset hours. But if you have to go out then take these precautions:
Drink a lot of fluid all day:
Before you feel thirsty, drink lots of water prior to beginning work and about one cup in every 20 minutes while working. Liquids with sodium content are also a good choice. Coconut water is the best choice. In addition to this, drink fruit juice, vegetable juice or electrolyte rich sports drink
Wear a good hat, light-colored and light weight, loose clothing.
Take it slowly:
Work slowly and take short, frequent breaks. Gradually increase the frequency, intensity and duration of your tasks as you become acclimatized.
Heat stroke, Heat related illnesses, Hydration:
Dehydration plays a huge part in leading to a heat related illness. Sweat is our body’s way of cooling itself down and when your hydration levels fall, your body no longer has the ability to cool itself down by producing sweat causing your temperature to rise to a dangerous level and leaving you in danger of heat stroke. Some other factors that play a part in your risk for heat stroke are pre existing conditions such as heart, lung or kidney disease, obesity or being underweight, and diabetes. Age also plays a part in your risk for heat related illness, infants and children under 4, as well as adults over 65 may be even more susceptible.
