Gum Diseases can Lead to Preterm Pregnancy or LBW

Poor oral health of mothers leads to poor oral health of children.

Your belly isn’t the only thing that’s swelling up in pregnancy days. Your gums may also be extra tender, swollen, red, sensitive and prone to bleeding during pregnancy, especially when you brush and floss.

The same pregnancy hormones that cause your mucus membranes to swell (and your sinuses to clog up) also inflame your gums from around week 15 of pregnancy on, making them more likely to bleed easily. Those hormones also leave your mouth more vulnerable to bacteria and plaque, both of which make for tender gums during pregnancy – and can cause gingivitis and tooth decay in some women if not treated properly.

About half mothers to be are likely to suffer from gum diseases during pregnancy:

As a result of hormonal changes and a relatively poor dental hygiene, gums tend to be excessively sensitive during pregnancy, causing problems like gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and periodontitis (gum disease). Saliva, food and bacteria form a coating on your teeth called plaque and makes your gums prone to bleeding. The gums become red and swollen and may exhibit extreme sensitivity.

Symptoms of Gum Diseases:

  • Gum inflammation, redness and soreness
  • Bad mouth odour or taste develops
  • Tooth ache

Pregnant women with periodontal (gum) disease may be at a higher risk of problems such as early delivery or low birth weight babies.

Pregnancy Gingivitis:

The increased levels of progesterone during pregnancy puts pregnant women at a higher risk of developing dental problems as it causes an exaggerated response to plaque bacteria. Gingivitis is common in women during months 2 to 8 of pregnancy, and even though you may follow a healthy oral care routine, you still run at a risk of developing gingivitis during pregnancy.

It's true that the hormonal changes of pregnancy can lead to "pregnancy gingivitis." This produces swelling, bleeding, tenderness in the gums.

Gum Diseases and Premature Birth:

Significant studies have shown a link between poor dental hygiene and premature birth. Researchers of one study who published their results in The Journal of the American Dental Association found that pregnant women with chronic gum disease were four to seven times more likely to deliver prematurely (before gestational week 37) and underweight babies than mothers with healthy gums.

Prevent Gum Diseases in Pregnancy

The childbearing year, including the preconception period, provides an opportunity for preventive dental health care to improve the health of a mother and subsequently her infant.

Oral Health Benefits of Xylitol base Mouthwash:

Xylitol decreases the incidence of dental caries by increasing salivary flow and pH13 and reducing the number of cariogenic (MS) and periodontopathic (Helicobacter pylori) bacteria, plaque levels, xerostomia, gingival inflammation, and erosion of teeth.

Adjunctive therapy with xylitol base Mouthwash used three to four times daily is effective in reducing maternal transmission of S. mutans.

Xylitol is a “generally regarded as safe” (GRAS) sweetener approved and available in the United States. Xylitol inhibits bacterial growth and results in decreased acid production and cavity formation. Decreased bacterial load also limits the potential passage of S. mutans from mother to infant after birth.
