Quest Biotech India Pvt. Ltd. celebrating the National Doctors Day in remembrance of Dr. BC Roy: Pioneer of Medical Services of India.

“God and the Doctor we alike adore. But only when in danger, not before; the danger o’er, both are alike requited, God is forgotten, and the Doctor slighted.” — Robert Owen

Today Quest Biotech India Pvt. Ltd. is celebrating The National Doctors day with full enthusiasm in remembrance of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, former West Bengal Chief Minister and a physician. He was born in 1882 AD, and with his hard work in medical field became the legendary physician, who was also honoured with the Bharat Ratna in 1961.

He served a long tenure of 14 years as a Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1948–1962 post independence. He was a close friend and Doctor of Gandhiji and fought many movements for independence of India. Unexpectedly, on his birthday he left this world leaving his memories of service to mankind at the age of 80 in 1962 AD.

In India, National Doctors Day is nothing less than a festival – at least it should be. Perhaps, after God, parents, and teachers, it is the doctors whom we revere the most as they save lives. This day is observed on varying days across the world.

National Doctors Day, today, is a big awareness campaign that offers awareness and active participation in healthcare all while understanding the roles, responsibilities, and importance of doctors in the country.

Humanity, in general, is largely dependent on such able bodied personnel as doctors to alleviate them from physical & psychological ailments. Ever since the inception of medicine into our lives – we have made progress in leaps & bounds – in terms of approach, infrastructure & treatment procedures. This coupled with the sheer experience and mastery of being able to perform complex surgical & medical procedures is an added advantage to us civilians.

With that said, we should take responsibility of choosing the right physician for our healthcare needs.

How National Doctors Day is celebrated in India

Like other nations, we commemorate a day to appreciating the achievements of our doctors. Different events, activities, and campaigns are run all day. General screening test camps are organised with facilities like free blood test, blood sugar test, ECG, and blood pressure checkup. What is the impact of GST (Goods and Service Tax) on Pharmaceutical Sector?

The Indian healthcare sector is likely to touch $150 billion by the end of 2017, witnessing an increase of $70 billion since 2012. The Goods and Services Tax (GST) undoubtedly is the most important indirect tax reform measure taken by the Government since our Independence. This is going to be a game-changer for many industries, including Indian Pharmaceutical industry. Nearly 17 federal and state taxes will be replaced with one uniform tax, thereby eliminating the troubles arising out of multiple taxes. This is also going to simplify the process of tax filing and in general the taxation system.

The Indian Pharmaceutical Industry has been extremely growing in the recent years, and the Ministry of Health targets the development of new technologies by the end of this year to treat diseases, such as cancer and tuberculosis. To attract more foreign direct investment (FDI), the Government raised the FDI cap for brownfield Pharmaceutical investments to 74% in June and above 74% with the government approval and FDI cap for Greenfield Pharmaceutical investments raised to 100%.

What is GST?

GST stands for Goods and Service Tax is the biggest Tax reform in the era of Indian Indirect Taxation industry which will subsume various taxes like VAT, CST, Service tax, excise duty, additional excise duty, Luxury Tax, Entertainment Tax and many more. GST is the single taxation system in India which will help in eliminating time, cost and effort.

Now let us understand the impact of GST on Pharmaceutical industry. An enactment of the most awaited Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill caught the attention throughout all industries in India. It will benefit most of the sectors and make the taxation easier as compared to the current taxation system.

What is the impact of GST (Goods and Service Tax) on Pharmaceutical Sector?

1. The goods and services tax (GST), India’s biggest indirect tax reform, is expected to be beneficial for Indian drug makers in the medium to long run as it aims to simplify tax structure and bring operational efficiency.

2. As far as the health care and pharma industry is concerned, it is expected that the new GST legislation would benefit the consumers by making affordable health care a reality.

3. Goods and Service Tax is expecting to have a positive impact on the Indian Pharmaceutical Industries as it will decrease the manufacturing cost, since eight different taxes are levied in the pharmaceutical industries helps in easy going business.

4. The Biggest advantages for the Industries, Traditional Cost and Distribution Model will get replaced by supply chain efficiencies due to discontinuance of the Central Sales tax and interstate transactions between two dealers will become tax neutral.

5. This will lead to a decrease in cost which can be added to margins and even customers will get benefited from it.

6. The rate of GST should be kept at a comparative level in the lowest slab for the pharmaceutical industries. Analysts specify the GST rate up to 12% to be neutral tax rate whereas anything above will have an inflationary effect on pricing. GST Council has finalized the tax rates of the products in Nil, 5 percent, and 12 percent category.

7. Pharmaceutical companies will experience improved operational efficiency, reduced manufacturing & transaction costs as well as improved compliance. It will also benefit warehousing strategy.

8. The simplification of supply chain and improved operating environment will alone add 2% to the size of the pharma market.

9. Implementation of GST will result in an efficient supply chain. GST will give a 2% reduction in production or distribution cost will add to the profits by over 20%.

10. As of now, companies kept their warehouses in different States to avoid Central Sales tax of different States. Now, they can consolidate warehouses at strategic locations as they will only have to pay Integrated GST (IGST) on inter-state supplies of Goods and Services.

Concerns:

1. It is uncertain till now that the healthcare services and lifesaving drugs will continue to be exempted or not under GST Regime. Under Current Indirect Taxation, these are exempted from Excise Duty and Custom Duty and some states charges 5% taxes on Medicines.

2. As GST is applicable on phases of the supply chain, it will have negative impact on Free-drugs samples, Bonus/Discount Schemes.

Most analysts have pointed out that despite initial issues of tax rate and compliance, in the long run GST will be a win-win situation for both pharmaceutical companies and consumers.
The impact of GST on the pharmaceutical industry is still not very transparent. But both end consumers and industry players hope this to culminate in a win-win situation. With reduced complexities and overall reduction in cost this translates to be a profitability and promising development.

Eid Al-Fitr – A Celebration of Gratitude

Eid Al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan and also well known as the festival of “Breaking the Fast”.

Millions of Muslims around the world will be gathering with their family and friends, attending morning prayers, giving donations to charity and having feasts together.

While Eid is the celebration of Allah, it is also an opportunity to reflect on Ramadan and all of the wonderful aspects of our lives that we are blessed to have.

Gratitude for Food

Abstaining from eating and drinking in the day during Ramadan is very quick to remind you how lucky we are to have the choice to eat and drink.

During Eid, families will exchange food, go to big markets and give food to the less fortunate.

Eid, which means “festival”, is a three day celebration of joy and gratitude for the blessings of everyday life.

Gratitude for Family

Like many festive occasions, Eid is celebrated by spending time with family and friends.

Today, we live in a fast paced society where we are constantly busy with work and everyday responsibilities.

Unfortunately, many of us will not find the time to spend it with the people that we love. During Eid, Muslims are encouraged to be joyful and to come together as a community.

Gratitude for Health

To Muslims, Eid is giving thanks to Allah for having given them the strength to fast and to be able to practise resilience and self-control.

In everyday life, our health can be taken for granted. Ramadan for many people is a reminder for one to take care of themselves, to slow down and to eat well in the evenings.

Fasting is not an easy task and Eid is a celebration for not only having the strength to do this, but also of the gift of health.

There are many reasons to be grateful during Eid and each year, Ramadan will teach us something about ourselves but most of all, people will spend this occasion together to think of others and to celebrate life.

FEELCAL: Calcium Supplementation is Preventing Hypertensive Disorders

What Is Preeclampsia?

Formerly called toxemia, preeclampsia is a condition that pregnant women develop. It is marked by high blood pressure in women who have previously not experienced high blood pressure before. Preeclamptic women will have a high level of protein in their urine and often also have swelling in the feet, legs, and hands. This condition usually appears late in pregnancy, generally after the 20 week mark, although it can occur earlier.

If undiagnosed, preeclampsia can lead to eclampsia, a serious condition that can put you and your baby at risk, and in rare cases, cause death. Women with preeclampsia who have seizures are considered to have eclampsia.

There's no way to cure preeclampsia, and that can be a scary prospect for moms-to-be. But you can help protect yourself by learning the symptoms of preeclampsia and by seeing your doctor for regular prenatal care. When preeclampsia is caught early, it's easier to manage.

What Causes Preeclampsia?

The exact causes of preeclampsia and eclampsia -- a result of a placenta that doesn't function properly -- are not known, although some researchers suspect poor nutrition or high body fat are possible causes. Insufficient blood flow to the uterus could be associated. Genetics plays a role, as well.

Who Is at Risk for Preeclampsia?

Preeclampsia is most often seen in first-time pregnancies, in pregnant teens, and in women over 40. While it is defined as occurring in women have never had high blood pressure before, other risk factors include:

  • A history of high blood pressure prior to pregnancy
  • A history of preeclampsia
  • Having a mother or sister who had preeclampsia
  • A history of obesity
  • Carrying more than one baby
  • History of diabetes, kidney disease, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Preeclampsia?

In addition to swelling, protein in the urine, and high blood pressure, preeclampsia symptoms can include:

  • Rapid weight gain caused by a significant increase in bodily fluid
  • Abdominal pain
  • Severe headaches
  • Change in reflexes
  • Reduced urine or no urine output
  • Dizziness
  • Excessive vomiting and nausea
  • Vision changes

You should seek care right away if you have:

  • Sudden and new swelling in your face, hands, and eyes (some feet and ankle swelling is normal during pregnancy.)
  • Blood pressure greater than 140/90.
  • Sudden weight gain over 1 or 2 days
  • Abdominal pain, especially in the upper right side
  • Severe headaches
  • A decrease in urine
  • Blurry vision, flashing lights, and floaters

You can also have preeclampsia and not have any symptoms. That's why it's so important to see your doctor for regular blood pressure checks and urine tests.

How Can Preeclampsia Affect Baby and Mother?

Preeclampsia can prevent the placenta from receiving enough blood, which can cause your baby to be born very small. It is also one of the leading causes of premature births, and the complications that can follow, including learning disabilities, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, hearing and vision problems.

In moms-to-be, preeclampsia can cause rare but serious complications that include:

  • Stroke
  • Seizure
  • Water in the lungs
  • Heart failure
  • Reversible blindness
  • Bleeding from the liver
  • Bleeding after you've given birth
  • Preeclampsia can also cause the placenta to suddenly separate from the uterus, which is called placental abruption. This can cause stillbirth.

Calcium supplementation to prevent superimposed Preeclampsia:

Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy are still the leading cause of maternal mortality in developing nations. According to the most recent World Health Organization review, hypertensive disorders accounted for 25% of all maternal deaths. Superimposed preeclampsia is a condition characterized by increasing blood pressure and proteinuria after the 20th week of pregnancy in women with pre-existing chronic hypertension. Superimposed preeclampsia usually develops earlier than other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, tends to be more severe, and can lead to fetal growth restriction, elective preterm delivery, and increased risk for perinatal mortality.

It can also lead to severe adverse maternal outcomes, including hypertensive encephalopathy, heart or kidney failure, placental abruption, HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets) syndrome, and maternal mortality. It is estimated that approximately 14 to 78% of all women with pre-existing chronic hypertension will develop superimposed preeclampsia during pregnancy; those with abnormal uterine artery Doppler are at even higher risk.

Feelcal an Ideal Treatment for Preeclampsia

The existing evidence indicates that supplementing high-risk women with Calcium Citrate Maleate, Vitamin D3, Magnesium Hydroxide and Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate can potentially reduce their risk of developing preeclampsia.

Calcium Citrate Maleate, Vitamin D3, Magnesium Hydroxide and Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate as ideal supplementation during pregnancy as effective interventions to prevent preeclampsia and to reduce maternal mortality.

The Effect of L-Carnitine on Preeclampsia Effected Woman

Pre-eclampsia is a potentially dangerous pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure.

Pre-eclampsia usually begins after 20 weeks of pregnancy in a woman whose blood pressure had been normal. It can lead to serious, even fatal, complications for both mother and baby.

There may be no symptoms. High blood pressure and protein in the urine are key features. There may also be swelling in the legs and water retention, but this can be hard to distinguish from normal pregnancy.

Pre-eclampsia can often be managed with oral or IV medication until the baby is sufficiently mature to be delivered. This often requires weighing the risks of early delivery versus the risks of continued pre-eclampsia symptoms.

  • A history of high blood pressure prior to pregnancy
  • A history of preeclampsia
  • Having a mother or sister who had preeclampsia
  • A history of obesity
  • Carrying more than one baby
  • History of diabetes, kidney disease, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis

Signs & Symptoms of Preeclampsia:

Pregnancy is a confusing time. Your body is going through a lot of changes and it can be hard to tell what's normal and what's a red flag. Learning more about the signs and symptoms of preeclampsia, HELLP syndrome and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy can help you identify a problem early and ensure the best possible outcome.

Some characteristics of preeclampsia are signs that can be measured, but may not be apparent to you, such as high blood pressure. A symptom is something you may experience and recognize, such as a headache or loss of vision.

No Symptoms

Preeclampsia is a serious condition of pregnancy, and can be particularly dangerous because many of the signs are silent while some symptoms resemble “normal” effects of pregnancy on your body. Many women suffering from preeclampsia don’t feel sick, and may be surprised or become frustrated when they are admitted to the hospital or prescribed bed rest since they still feel well.

High blood pressure (Hypertension)

High blood pressure during pregnancy is one of the biggest red flags that preeclampsia may be developing. And even if it's not a symptom of preeclampsia, it can still be a sign of a problem.

High blood pressure is traditionally defined as blood pressure of 140/90 or greater, measured on two separate occasions six hours apart. During pregnancy, a rise in the lower number (diastolic) of 15 degrees or more, or a rise in the upper number (systolic) of 30 degrees or more can also be a cause for concern.

Protein in your urine (Proteinuria)

Proteinuria, another sign of preeclampsia, is the result of proteins, normally confined to the blood by the filtering role of your kidney, spilling into your urine. This is because preeclampsia temporarily damages this “filter.”  Albumin, as well as many other proteins, are lost this way.

Swelling (Edema)

A certain amount of swelling is normal during pregnancy. Unless you're one of a lucky few, you may notice a little extra puffiness in your feet (good luck fitting into your pre-pregnancy shoes!).

Headaches

Dull or severe, throbbing headaches, often described as migraine-like that just won't go away are cause for concern.

Nausea or Vomiting

Nausea or vomiting is particularly significant when the onset is sudden and after mid-pregnancy. “Morning sickness” should disappear after the first trimester and the sudden appearance of nausea and vomiting after mid pregnancy may be linked to preeclampsia.

Abdominal (stomach area) and/or Shoulder Pain

This type of abdominal pain, often called epigastric pain or upper right quadrant (URQ) pain, is usually under the ribs on the right side. It can be confused with heartburn, gallbladder problems, flu, indigestion or pain from the baby kicking. Shoulder pain is often called “referred pain” because it radiates from the liver under the right ribs. Lower back pain is different from muscle strain common to pregnancy, because it is usually more acute and specific. Shoulder pain can feel like someone is deeply pinching you along the bra strap or on your neck, or it can be painful to lie on your right side. All of these pain symptoms may be a sign of

Some Other Symptoms are:

  • Lower Back Pain
  • Sudden Weight Gain
  • Changes in Vision
  • Hyperreflexia
  • Shortness of breath, anxiety

L-Carnitine in Preeclampsia

L-carnitine helps reduce oxidative stress and is used by your body as it turns fat into energy. It's found naturally in your body, in dairy products and in red meat as well as in supplement form. You may hear that supplemental L-carnitine will help you get pregnant, improve your energy while you are pregnant and help your baby gain weight.

Preeclampsia is associated with abnormal lipid metabolism, including fatty acid metabolism. Carnitine plays an indispensable role in the oxidation of fatty acids.

The considerable increased plasma carnitine concentrations, together with the accumulation of lipids, support the role of abnormal lipid metabolism in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia. It is suggested that toxic metabolites resulting from abnormal fatty acid oxidation in the placenta contribute to the endothelial dysfunction of preeclampsia.

Vitamin E in Preeclampsia

The findings indicate that routine supplementation with vitamin E in combination with other supplements during pregnancy did improve outcomes for babies or women. There was a reduction in the number of placentas coming away early (placental abruption) in women given vitamin E supplements in combination with other agents, which was rated as high-quality evidence.
